John Michael Kohler Art Center (JMKAC) is one of our area's gems of creativity. Even the bathrooms are a work of art! Yet, it's not only a destination for families to view art, but their workshops encourage hands-on exploration.
One of the best ways children learn is through play and open-ended activities. Exploring and discovering parts of the world around them in their own way, and asking questions (yes, sometimes lots and lots of questions!) gives children a chance to draw their own understanding. When you add in exploring with art, children are given room to be themselves and just create!
Little ones are drawn to being in the moment,
especially when it comes to Art - the chance to
feel the smear of paint on paper,
the sparkle of glitter on their hands,
cutting and gluing random scraps
to make something extraordinary.
Children who are given the chance to experiment with art in their own way have less fear of making mistakes or worrying about making something exactly as someone else. And when kids feel good while they are creating, it adds a boost of self-confidence that can extend well beyond the art room.
